Dr. Joseph E. Pizzorno, Jr., ND, Founder and President Dr. Joseph E. Pizzorno, Jr., appointed by President Clinton in December 2000 to the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy and by the Bush administration to the Medicare Coverage Advisory Committee in November 2002, is one of the world's leading authorities on science-based natural medicine. A physician, educator, researcher and expert spokesperson, Dr. Pizzorno is founding president of Bastyr University. He is Editor of Integrative Medicine: A Clinicians Journal and Chair of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Functional Medicine. Licensed as a naturopathic physician in Washington State since 1975, he has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors for his academic, professional and public affairs leadership. Dr. Pizzorno is the co-author of the internationally acclaimed Textbook of Natural Medicine, the best-selling Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine (1,000,000 copies in six languages), and five other books.

Matthew Brignall, ND, Science Director Dr. Matthew Brignall, ND, specializes in complementary and integrative medicine treatment for patients with cancer. He is Director of Research at Dr Pizzorno, an organization that develops cutting-edge AI tools to help identify and reverse each individual's underlying causes of ill health and promote wellness. He is also an adjunct Professor of Clinical Nutrition at Bastyr University, teaching both on campus and at the University's Natural Health Clinic. A noted author whose writing has been recognized and cited by the American Cancer Society, Dr. Brignall has published numerous articles on the prevention and treatment of cancer in medical journals and textbooks including The Alternative Medicine Review, Health Notes Review of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, and The Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Brignall graduated from Bastyr University with a doctoral degree in Naturopathic Medicine and also holds a Bachelor of Science from University of Michigan.

Recent publications include: contributing author to Textbook of Functional Medicine, (IFM, 2006), Integrative Medicine: A Clinician's Journal (Innovisions Communications,Inc.), Textbook of Natural Medicine (Elsevier, 2005), lead author of Natural Medicine Instructions for Patients (Elsevier, 2002), co-author of The Encyclopedia of Healing Foods (Scribner's, 2005,), and editor, The World's Healthiest Foods Essential Guide for the healthiest way of eating (George Mateljan Foundation, 2006). Lara summarizes nutrition-related research for the Textbook of Natural Medicine e-dition, The World's Healthiest Foods website (www.whfoods.org), and Dr. Pizzorno's WebMD blog. William Benda MD, FACEP, FAAEM, Medical Director
William Benda MD, FACEP, FAAEM, Medical Director Dr. Benda received his professional training at Duke University, University of Miami School of Medicine, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, and the Program in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona under Dr. Andrew Weil. He has served as Director of Emergency Medical Services and Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCLA, as the sole physician in Eastern Rwanda during the 1994 genocide and subsequent cholera epidemic, and as medical director of the Big Sur Health Center. His research and clinical work has focused on patients with breast cancer, animal-assisted therapy, and physician health and well-being. Dr. Benda is a co-founder of the National Integrative Medicine Council, a non-profit organization for which he has served as Director of Medical and Public Affairs. He is an editor, contributor, and medical advisory board member for a number of conventional and alternative medicine journals, and lectures extensively on a variety of topics in the integrative arena.

Raven Bonnar-Pizzorno, MS, Staff Writer Raven Bonnar-Pizzorno has a Master of Science degree in Nutrition from Bastyr University. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Washington with a focus on Anthropology. She was project coordinator for the Foundations of Naturopathic Medicine Textbook Project and has co-authored articles in Integrative Medicine; a Clinician's Journal. She researches, writes articles, and develops nutrition tools for Dr Pizzorno. She works at Overlake Hospital where she counsels patients on their nutrition. Buck Levin, PhD, RD Buck Levin, PhD, RD, has worked for the past 20 years to broaden the understanding of students, healthcare practitioners, and the general public about diverse aspects of food and health. As Adjunct Associate Professor of Nutrition at Bastyr University, he has taught over 30 different courses in the field of nutrition while continuously pioneering new courses from Adverse Food Reactions to Food Politics. Dr. Levin has delivered over 150 invited presentations to clinicians and the general public, with audiences before national meetings of the American Dietetic Association and EarthSave International. In addition to his ground-breaking publication of Environmental Nutrition: Understanding the Relationship between Environment, Food Quality, and Disease (HingePin Publishing, 1999), Dr. Levin teamed up in 2006 with Elson Haas, MD to write Staying Healthy With Nutrition: 21st Century Edition (Ten Speed Press). Dr. Levin graduated Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude, Distinction in Psychology from Yale University, and since 1987 has remained licensed as a registered dietitian in clinical practice.

Ryan Bradley, ND Ryan Bradley, ND is a residency-trained naturopathic physician currently practicing at the Bastyr University Center for Natural Health. Dr. Bradley has a specialty interest and expertise in integrative medicine in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease. He is actively involved in the clinical research development for the Naturopathic Medicine Research Agenda, a five-year research plan unifying the research efforts of all accredited naturopathic institutions. Dr. Bradley has served as a pre-doctoral NIH research fellow while studying at Bastyr University. The advancement of naturopathic physicians as primary care providers throughout the country is another priority area of action for Dr. Bradley, an area he develops daily in his practice and via the expansion of relationships between naturopathic physicians and conventional colleagues. Dr. Bradley's undergraduate training in chemical engineering and experience in pharmacology research help create a strong foundation in general biomedical science.

Jennifer Cornforth, ND A naturopathic physician and graduate of Bastyr University, Dr. Cornforth brings to the Dr Pizzorno team a combination of clinical and critical thinking honed by research and information management in a variety of disciplines.� Dr. Cornforth graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Wesleyan University with a degree in psychology.� She then worked in data compilation and analysis in the fields of medicine and law before attending Bastyr University, where she served several years on the Institutional Review Board.� Dr. Cornforth contributes to the Dr Pizzorno team as a health informatics expert on many topics including health risk assessment.� Currently she continues her work in research, writing, and information management in the area of addiction medicine for the Science and Management of Addictions Foundation.

Petra Elena Eichelsdoerfer, RPh, MS (Nutrition), ND
Petra Elena Eichelsdoerfer, RPh, MS (Nutrition), ND Dr. Eichelsdoerfer graduated from Bastyr University and the University of Washington. She worked clinically for 10 years as a pharmacist in retail, poison center and public health settings before entering and completing Bastyr's MS Nutrition and Naturopathic Medicine programs. Currently teaching a wide variety of courses at Seattle Institute of Oriental Medicine (SIOM) and Bastyr, she also researches at Bastyr and writes content for Dr Pizzorno, Inc. Her primary areas of interest are probiotics and fermented foods, obesity, toxicology, and interactions associated with medications, foods, and dietary supplements.

Stephanie Gailing, MS Stephanie Gailing is a nutritionist, writer and natural health education consultant who received her MS in Nutrition from Bastyr University. She has over 16 years work experience in varied facets of wellness education including operating her own natural products retail store and consulting company, and developing educational materials for dietary supplement manufacturers. Formerly Director of Nutrition Research and Client Services for The Hartman Group, where she authored Integrated Health Care: Consumer Use and Attitudes, a research study surveying the public's participation in complementary/alternative medicines, Stephanie has written widely for both businesses and consumers on nutrition and integrated healthcare. She has served as adjunct faculty at Bastyr where she tought Nutritional Supplements and Herbs, and Introduction to Nutrition in Natural Medicine classes to undergraduate and graduate nutrition students.

Alicia Gonzalez, ND Dr. Gonzalez graduated from Bastyr University's naturopathic medicine program in 2002. Upon graduation, she completed an informal residency at Woodland Park Wellness, a clinic specializing in physical medicine and the treatment of chronic pain. She also completed a one year teaching fellowship at Bastyr University. During the fellowship, she learned skills to become an educator while furthering her knowledge in naturopathic medicine. Dr. Gonzalez participated in clinic shifts both at the Bastyr Center for Natural Health as well as the University's on-campus shift. She guest lectured in a variety of courses ranging from biochemistry and neurology to grand rounds and botanical medicine. She was co-instructor of the Childhood Vaccination elective as well as Psychological Assessment and full professor for the Practice Managament series and counseling labs. Upon completion of the fellowship, she became an adjunct faculty member. Outside of Bastyr University, she has her own private practice, Tashi Delek Health & Wellness, in Seattle. Beginning July, 2004, Dr. Gonzalez will begin seeing patients in a study through Bastyr University designed to evaluate the effect meditation has on patients in a hospice setting in the final stages of life.

Joseph Katzinger, ND Dr. Joseph Katzinger is a naturopathic physician and graduate of Bastyr University. Dr. Katzinger graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from Michigan State University. While at Michigan State he also completed programs within the Lyman Briggs College of Natural Science and the Honor's College, and completed research in the biochemistry department on the influence of environmental conditions upon gene expression/regulation. Dr. Katzinger brings to Dr Pizzorno his strong research skills and passion for integrative medicine. While versed in all facets of naturopathic medicine, Dr. Katzinger's focus is in primary care with a strong interest in environmental medicine. He currently is in private practice in Shoreline, Washington.

Jennifer Lush, ND Dr. Jennifer Lush is a Naturopathic physician currently in private practice in Anchorage, Alaska. Dr. Lush graduated holds an undergraduate degree in pre-med and psychology from the University of Washington, and graduated from the ND program at Bastyr University in 2001. While at Bastyr, Dr. Lush worked in the research department for 5 years on various topics ranging from HIV/AIDS research to breast cancer epidemiology studies. Upon graduation in 2001, she opened a primary care practice in Seattle, WA and worked as a consulting naturopath for Pharmaca Integrative Pharmacy.
